So Wrong, And Yet I Watch

MTV has this show, all about teen aged girls who get knocked up. It follows them as they near the end of their pregnancies, and then for a few weeks after the baby's birth. We the viewers get to see all these young girls have their realities checked as they go from anticipating what life will be like with a baby and boyfriend, to what life is really like with baby and boyfriend.

You can probably guess that most of the time, the show ends with the girls alone, taking care of a child she realizes now was a mistake having. The guys have moved on, though in a few cases, it was the girls who pushed them away. In fact, I watched one episode last week where the girl had twins, and all the dad wanted was for them to be a family. He did everything he could, but the mom just wanted to be with her ex boyfriend. She wouldn't let the dad spend time with the twins alone, and by the end of the show, he was dating someone new, and the mom wanted him back. She claimed she didn't realize what she had until it was gone.

Really? These are KIDS having babies. They have no idea what real life is like. Of course, there are exceptions, and I watched a "where are they now" kind of episode, and a lot of the moms were doing great...without their boyfriends. What worries me is that there are enough of these girls to make a series, and that there are people like me who can't stop watching.

Oh, and MTV? Airing a commercial about abstinence during a show about teen pregnancy is kinda funny. In a weird, really wrong kind of way.

My only hope is that teen aged girls are watching this, too, and seeing how hard life becomes after baby, and they will think twice about getting pregnant themselves.

I've never watched it, but it sounds like the whole show could qualify as a commercial about abstinence.

"Yeah, you might think it's a little harmless fun, but look what can happen."

you know programmes like this are deliberatly designed to be bias..its not all a case of girls 'getting' themselves pregnant..i think and i speak from personal experience that there is never one answer but i can say a look at how regected or lonely the girl was/is in her own family that may lead to the thought/desperation to have her 'own' family to put that right, believing that she would have a 'better' family or she would provide her child with love etc..obviously it isnt always like this but this part has had virtually no investigation and does play a huge role..that is why i myself feel that instead of governments being obsessed with sending both parents to work, they should consider the fact that we as parents should be the ones looking after our children not strangers, no matter how good they profess to be. Its not the same as a mother/father giving them the time and love in their lives..
Not all 16 year old girls who get pregnant are just ready and waiting to get up the spout..sometimes it might be simply a need to be loved and wanted.
just a view

anna ~ absolutely. I just hope that the girls watching get that it's not easy, and that they protect themselves a little better.

ishi ~ I never said the girls got pregnant on purpose. In fact, that is one thing they don't touch on with the show..the reasons why these girls got pregnant. I just hope that the girls, and boys for that matter, can see how difficult it is, and better protect themselves.

I see plenty of teen girls round my area of London, with not one but two or more kids. The worlds gone crazy, most of these kids have barly got a clue about how to look after themselfs, let alone raising a family. If only they could have been as keen to get an education as they were to drop thier knickers...!
