Do you remember the first tooth your oldest child lost? The excitement of finally getting to be the tooth fairy? If your children are still too young and haven't lost a tooth yet, are you looking forward to that moment?
I am so over it. The sad thing is I still have a child who hasn't yet begun to loose her teeth. I wish I could hire a tooth fairy. Why, you ask?
On Friday, Kasi lost a tooth on the bus. She was all excited to put it under her pillow. I think at 10 years old, she is too old to believe in the tooth fairy, but I hate the thought of shattering her imagination. So, under her pillow the tooth goes. Saturday morning, it's still there. The tooth fairy forgot to come. Crap! I tell her he was probably busy, it being a Friday night and all. (As a side note, ever since watching The Santa Clause, the tooth fairy is a "he". Twisted, I know) She says she'll try again. Well, wanna guess what was under her pillow this morning? Yup, the tooth. I forgot again. How horrible am I?
So what does Kasi do? Loose another tooth this afternoon. Now I'm in trouble.
So what do I do? I tell her there is no such thing as the tooth fairy, and handed her $1.00, $.50 for each tooth. When I told Ryan last year, he immediately asked about Santa. Not Kasi. She looked crushed. So now I feel bad. But isn't 10 about the age kids stop believing? Did I do something horrible to my child? Is she traumatized for life? Will this be the subject of some future therapy session? I hope not.
I'm sure being the middle child will give her enough to talk to her future therapist about!
