A few months ago we moved into an apartment. Actually, it's a duplex. When we moved in there was a young couple living in the other side, but they moved out about a month later. Yesterday we had a man look at the apartment, and this morning the for rent sign was taken down. I guess this means we are going to have a new neighbor. Most people would feel more comfortable having someone next door, but it actually makes me a little uneasy. We don't have homeowners insurance
and if something were to happen, we would lose everything. I worry that they will be smokers, and fall asleep in bed with a lit cigarette. I have gone over our fire escape routes with the kids. We did it the first night we stayed here. I'm just a worrier. I'm sure it will be fine, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Since you're renting, you don't actually need homeowner's insurance...just renter's insurance. Have you checked anywhere for any quotes on renter's insurance? It's actually quite a bit less expensive than homeowner's insurance, since it's only insuring the contents of your home. When we lived in an apartment, our insurance was only about $115 for the year.
I understand not wanting someone next door, though :-).
You HAVE to get renters insurance! I live in a condo - a year ago we were getting a new neighbor upstairs. They had almost finished bringing all their stuff up, and had left to get their last load. Someone comes banging on my door that there is a fire - I taske my kids and get outside and look back at the building and the whole second and third floor where on fire. The people moving in had set a box on the stove before they left and the burner was on real low and caught the box on fire. Their condo was a total loss and the other three in the building had instense smoke damaage. Don't ever think something like this can't happen to you. Renters insurance is not that expensive and it covers tons of stuff not just fires.
I will echo with what the others said. We bought renters insurance in the last place we lived..it was actually a triplex...and we finally caved at buying the insurance after MUCH encouragement from family..lol. We are always on such a tight budget that we just thought it was a waste. But, we were very surprised at how affordable it was..I mean, we still had to save to buy it..but, the peace of mind is worth so much more..
It's true, renters insurance I think is as little as about 20 bucks a month. It's really good to have.
I think that is just part of being a mom, we have to worry about everything. Not a bad thing.
get renters insurance... it is cheap and necessary... and please leave me the SAME comment on my blog... b/c I need to get it too. lol
and just to be a complete worrier... please keep your door locked when you are home b/c you never know who the man could be living next door... i'm a complete lunatic about this sort of thing... and i'm sorry for putting thoughts in your head... but these thoughts could save your life or your childrens... now don't get my wrong i don't want you to loose sleep over this or not be friendly but i would be cautious. also if you can get his name, just see if you find him on the computer for anything wrong... like registered sex offender or anything.
sorry. for some reason i just always think of these things... they keep me awake at night and they haunt me all the time.
get insurance and don't stress too much... i'll be doing that for the both of us... also if you want to delete this comment, i totally understand... i know i'm crazy about stuff like this... it is just that you never know.
love you!!
