Kids And Cell Phones

Let me pose this question to you...

at what age do you allow your child to have a cell phone?

I ask because Ryan, who is 13, and Kasi, who will be 12 next week, want cell phones.

I think they are too young.

My sister got her son one, and he is only 10. I think that is WAY too young.

Why does a 10 year old need a phone?

Now, I know there are exceptions, like for kids who play sports and need to be picked up somewhere. But when you are with your kid 24/7, why do they need a cell?

I don't get it.

My daughter was allow to use her dads at age 13. Only when she was not with us, Stayed the night at camp or a friends. We did not get her one of her own until it was 3 months before her 15th b-day. My thought is if she is away from us I wanted her to be able to call if needed us. Now at 15 I have complete control of the phone talk time, text minutes, and downloads. We monitor it all the time. Went with T-Mobil, but now I hear others are allowing parent to control usage.

hmmmm... I'm not sure what age bc my kids are def to young at 5 and 3... lol my nephew is 13 and he has had a phone for a few years now... maybe since he was about 11 or so... but bc he was in a play that was in the High School while he was in 5th grade... so he maybe was even 10... I know it was pretty much in case of emergency bc of being at the HS for rehersals and all that... but i think that is pretty young. I'm not sure about Ryan and Kasi... i think it also depends on each kid. their grades, their behaviors and what they will do with a phone. will be they be respectful of your rules, of school rules and all that... who will they be calling. when will they be able to have it? who will pay the bill? will they do some extra chores to help towards paying their phone bills... that's a big question. i'm interested to see what repsonses you get and what you and Junior think aboug them having phones...

Alex has one because when Sam was in China I still had summer classes and Alex attended a summer camp during the day. So I wanted to make sure if I was needed he could get ahold of me.

Now on Thursdays he dances for 2 hours and sometimes I go walk around wally world or ride home and if I am going to be a few minutes late it good for him to have so he doesn't panic because when class lets out its dark and parents clear out fast.

We have a prepaid phone. I cannot see paying for phone service when we get so much for free, i.e., unlimited texting, free nights and weekends and mobile to mobile free.

I looked at Alex the other day and I was like what are you doing? He said, oh I am texting "blahblahblah" I said who is that? He said the 8th grader I met at the library, shes hot and she gave me her number.(big smile creeps across his face!!!)
Right then, I said hand over the phone. I read the texts and it was hey, what ya doing, nothing, what about you, nothing, alright, brb, gtg, c-ya.
So I told him, there are to be no texting unless I know about it, which the phone is in my purse unless I give it to him and I will read all texts if I feel like it!
I told him, "and Remember if theres something you are texting that you don't want a little girls daddy to read- you better not text it!" :-}
This was the only female I didn't know about ahead of time and now I know everyone whos texting on that phone and whats being said!!! Little sly booger!

That is a tough question. My oldest daughter just turned 9, and I have considered getting her one, since she is with her father 1/2 the time. Then I reconsidered when I thought about how irresponsible she is. She can barely take care of herself, how can she be responsible enough for a phone?

So much for my ramblings, my best educated guess would be around 16 years old, and then only if it is parent controlled, and they have a part time job to help pay for it!
