That's Mine!

I love going to the zoo.  You all know the elephants are my favorite, but I also love the birds.  They have this huge cage that you can go into with a little cup of nectar and feed the birds.  It's pretty awesome!  The birds will land on you and drink up.  Sometimes, they like to fight over who gets to drink more.  I snapped the picture above right as two birds were fighting over my cup.  The one below is pretty awesome, too, because not only did I catch a bird landing on my arm, but you can see the way the other birds are ticked off that he is trying to get their nectar.

Empty Nest

I was at my mom's house today, and of course, the first thing I did was check on the baby birds.  I was expecting to find more of this:

but instead, I found an empty nest.  I asked my mom when they flew away, and she said they were gone this morning when she checked on them.  I am sad that I didn't get to see them make that big first step, but I am happy that all four birds made it.

Hopefully next year we will have more babies.

They're Getting So Big!

I took this picture today at my mom's house.  I can not believe how fast these babies are growing!  All four are doing great, even though you can't see the others (they are under these big guys!). Mommy bird was very vocal today, right above my head, as I took this picture. 

I wonder how much longer it will be until they are flying on their own? 

The Birds Have Hatched!

 All four eggs hatched, and they seem to be doing well.  My mom says the mommy bird gets very mad whenever she goes near them, and I agree!  When I took this picture, mommy bird almost flew into my head!  Scared the crap out of me.They are kinda ugly right now, but as soon as they get their feathers they will be adorable!  I will try and get more pictures next week so we can all watch them grow.

Okay, Bird Watchers

I just talked to my mom, and she said the speckled egg is gone.  I wonder if the mommy bird got rid of it. 

Mom also said the mommy bird is a brownish gray, with no other colors.

Do we still think it's a robin?

What Kind Of Bird Laid These Eggs?

My mom has a running list of things she needs for Junior to do at her new house, so we spend a lot of time over there.  This past Saturday, Junior was supposed to trim some hedges and trees for her.  As she was pointed out what she wanted done, Junior spotted this nest in one of her trees, so naturally she said to leave it alone.  Check out the beautiful blue eggs.  My mom said they were robin's eggs.

Sunday when we went back over there, I wanted to see the eggs again, and this is what I found...

...two more eggs, and one of them is speckled.  Weird, right?  This is where I need some help.  Why is there one speckled egg?  Is it the same as the others, or did another bird lay an egg in this nest?  We also caught a glimpse of the mommy bird, and it didn't look like a robin.

Any ideas?

Birds

Remember the movie The Birds? This afternoon my yard looked like a scene right out of that movie. Brandi had gone outside to get something, and when she opened the door, all you heard were the birds. There were hundreds of them in the air and in the trees. Of course, Brandi had to grab my camera and take some pictures. This one was the best...if you look close enough, you can see some of the birds on the branches.

My Favorite Picture From The Zoo

My mom getting attacked by the birds! They sell little cups of nectar, and send you in an enclosure with all these birds. The past few times we have been, the birds weren't hungry. This morning, though, they acted like they were starving, and attacked us as soon as we walked in. At one point, I had about five lined up on my arm and shoulder. This is my sister Colleen. She had six on her arm. Poor Carson (her son) didn't know if he should laugh or cry, until one landed on his head, then he was screaming! I thought it was funny!
