My son turned thirteen.
I know the teen years are tough ones, when kids learn who they are, and who they want to be. It is a time when they learn to make their own decisions, and that those decisions can have serious consequences. It is also the time that they will fight for their independence. In my house, with my son, this includes his taste in music.
You see, we have always been a country music family. We do listen to some 80's rock, but as far as contemporary music, I have no idea who half the current singers and groups are. Well, my Ryan has become an expert. Thanks to the iPod, kids are sharing their music with each other at school. This has introduced my child to different artists, and I have to say, I feel like my parents. Oh man, did I just say that? Maybe it's better to say I now understand how they felt when as a teenager, the only sound coming out of my room for years were eighties power ballads. They didn't understand that, and I sure as heck don't understand Ryan's music.
I will, however, give him the courtesy of listening to the new hip hop artists that he has come to like. I listened to a song on ICEBLOC's newest album KRANKMUZIK and honestly don't think it's all bad. Is it the type of music I listen too? No. But I am open to letting my son listen to it, as long as he doesn't blast it throughout the house. The group is made up of two guys who have their heads on their shoulders. J.Keys was in the military, and started out on the business end of the industry. Vito spend his growing up years focused on making music, and wasn't always the most popular kids because of that. These two guys together show that with hard work and dedication, dreams can come true. That is something I want my son to know, because it is so important to not give up on your dreams.
So, will you catch me listening to this album and singing along? probably not. But I am pretty sure my son will love it, and that's okay with me.
