The Message ~ A Review

I could not have received this book, The Message - A Guide To Being Human for review at a more perfect time in my life.  The first few pages talk about change, and how holding onto things gets you nowhere.

I have let go of so much here lately, and I am so much happier for it. I know some people are having a hard time believing me, but it's the truth.  When my husband left (it's been a month already...can you believe it?) I had no idea what I was going to do.  My entire life I have been afraid of change.  I like routines.  Facing an uncertain future scared me to death, for about two days.  Then I put on my big girl panties, and decided that I am a strong woman who doesn't need a man in her life.  I accepted change, and look at all that I have accomplished.  Today, I took a huge step and got my driver's license.  You all know how scared I was of doing that, and I conquered that fear.  I smashed it actually.  And it feels awesome!

This book is all about empowerment, and accepting life and all that it has to offer.  You can find out more information about Divine Arts here.

Heaven Is For Real ~ A Book Review

I have never doubted that there is a heaven.  I know that someday, when I die, I will be reunited with all of those who have passed before me, and I will be waiting patiently for those who come after I am already there.  I am sure a majority of my readers will admit that they believe there is a heaven as well.  But what would you do if someone confirmed that for you?

In this book, three year old Colton Burpo amazes his family with stories of heaven.  He tells them that during an emergency appendectomy, which occurred while he was seriously ill, he left his body and visited heaven.  He talks about meeting family members there who have never been mentioned to him before, like his Grandfather and his sister, a baby his mother miscarried before he was born.  He described heaven in detail, and all those details were confirmed in the bible.

This book is an easy read, and the story is quite amazing, if you choose to believe it.  I know there are skeptics out there, but I am not one of them.  I choose to believe this little boy, and I can not wait to someday see all the things he discovered during his trip to heaven.

Shmirshky

Okay, ladies.  I have got to tell you about this book I just finished reading.  It is all about the journey we will all take, or have taken, through menopause.  I am still a few years away from my journey through it ( I hope! ), and this book has more than prepared me for what my shmirshky (that's code for vagina) is going to go through.

It's not written in a this is this and that is that kind of way, where everything is set in stone.  Instead, it is almost like a guidebook, letting women know what may happen during PM&M (which stands for pre-, peri-, and post- menopause) and the things they should talk to their doctors about.  Most importantly, the author encourages us women to talk about what we are going through with other women.  We should talk to the men in our lives, too.  Heck, we should talk to everyone!  The author shares stories about things that happened to her and her friends as they went through their journeys, which makes for some interesting (and funny!) reading.

Check out what the author has to say about Shmirshky:

You can find out more about this book here.  You can also like Shmirshky on Facebook and follow the author on Twitter.  I did both.

I would honestly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about what women go through during their menopausal journeys.  I think men could benefit from reading this book as well.  I mean, they have to go through it with us, so they may as well be prepared for it.

Girl's Day Of Reading

Yesterday at Brandi's school, they had a reading day dedicated to girls.  As most of you know, she is in an all girls class, and she loves it.  If you follow me on Facebook or read any of my other blogs, you know that I had a conference with her teacher on Monday to get her report card.  She did amazing, of course.  She is testing at a 5th/6th grade level, and she's only in 3rd grade.  She loves school, and was so excited yesterday, because the teachers promised the girls that Taylor Swift was going to read to them, live on television.  I am not sure exactly what it was, but Brandi came home and said that Taylor Swift just answered a lot of questions from the audience, and then sang Mine.  I don't think it was live...it sounds like an interview or something.  Either way, all the girls loved it.

This week is also book fair.  I sent money with Boo on Tuesday to buy Ramona & Beezus.  (the one that has picture sin it from the movie with Selena Gomez, her favorite actress) Yesterday, during girls day, they did a bunch of giveaways where they gave out a ton of books. and Brandi's name was called.  She was able to go up on stage and pick any book she wanted out of a huge selection.  She came home with a craft book.  I asked her why she picked that, and she said that she already had all the other books.

That's right.  we have so many books around here, we outdid the book fair!  Gotta love it.

Let's Do Lunch

The cover of this book reads, Let's Do Lunch Eating All The CALORIES and CARBS you want to lose weight.  Seeing as how I am a girl who has tried every other diet known to man, I was excited to read about this plan that would allow me to eat CARBS and lose weight.  I didn't really care about the calories, I just wanted to read about the diet that claims you can lose weight without giving up bread.

I wish I could tell you this book lived up to the title, but it didn't.  In fact, I found the claim of "eating all the CARBS you want" to be extremely misleading.

I was so disappointed with this book.

The real title should be "the frozen grape diet", or "the eat fruit smoothies until you get sick diet".  The only CARBS he allows on his diet plan are veggies and beans.  No bread.  No pasta.  No potatoes.  No white flour.  No sugar.  The last time I checked, these were CARBS.  If he claims I can eat all the CARBS I want and still lose weight, then I should be able to eat whatever CARBS I want.  The front of the book does not specify that you can only eat certain CARBS, and to be honest, after the first twelve times he claimed this diet not to be a fruit diet, I wasn't so sure.  The basis of this diet is eating frozen grapes.  Or popcorn sprayed with olive oil, which quite frankly, sounds a little disgusting.

If you are looking for a diet plan where you can eat protein once a day (at lunch time) and fruit the rest of the time, this is the book for you.  For those of us who actually like to eat, it is not a plan that would be easy to follow.

And that's very disappointing to me.

The Same Kind Of Different As Me

"But I found out everybody's different-the same kind of different as me.  We're all just regular folks walkin down the road God done set in front of us.

The truth about it is, whether we rich or poor or somethin in between, the earth ain't no final restin place.  So in a way, we is all homeless-just workin our way toward home"  ~Denver Moore

I have to admit something.  This is not the type of book that I would normally read.  But a couple of years ago, I read about this book on someone's blog.  I can't remember whose, but that doesn't really matter.  They were talking about how wonderful and inspiring this book was.  It piked my interest, so when I was given the opportunity to read and review it, I was excited.

The book is written by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, two people from completely different backgrounds who become close friends.  The book goes back and forth between Ron's point of view and Denver's point of view, and it was so interesting to read how one situation was viewed differently by each of them.  Ron is an art dealer; rich and well educated.  Denver is a modern day slave turned homeless man; poor and uneducated.  You wouldn't think that these two men would ever cross paths, let alone become close friends.  But they do, and the story of how this friendship developed is what this book is all about.

I strongly recommend this book for everyone to read.  You will be inspired to see past the outside of a person, and look within. You may just look inside yourself, too, and find the path you are meant to be on while working your way towards "home".
