Safety for Children on the Internet Is Called For

Post written by Dianne Klotzman

We all know the stories about how children are taken advantage of by someone on the internet. Those stories were frightening when we were first introducing our daughter to the wildblue internet. We were terrified that she would be taken advantage of by someone we didn't even know.

That is the reason we put off getting the internet for as long as we did. We gave her an old computer that was not hooked up to the wildblue satellite internet service that had a word processing program on it and some games so that she could become familiar with the ins and outs of computer usage but we were not quite ready to allow her to surf the net.

When we did install satellite internet service we sat down with her and told her that she could only use it to help her out with her home work. After we observed that she was using the internet as instructed we were convinced that she was mature enough to go ahead and allow her to interact with her friends on one of the social networks. She did well there and we were always watching anyway so we have now allowed her to use it the way she wants.

I agree with your sentiment. My son loves to play on the computer. He is six years old. I actually use KidZui for him, it sends me reports on what games he plays and what pages you views and it restricts the materials he can pull up pretty well. I recommend it very much.

Christy ~ I've never heard of this program, but I am going to check it out. I have a little one, and she loves the computer. Most of the time I am right here while she is on it, but sometimes she is on her own. It would be nice to see exactly what she is doing. It's so easy to misspell a word and end up on a site that is inappropriate for kids.
